Punjab Wheat Sowing 2026: Best Dates, Approved Varieties, Seed Rate and Yield Facts

Wheat is one of Pakistan’s most important food crops, and decisions made before sowing can influence crop establishment, input costs and final yield. For Punjab farmers, the most useful starting points are the local sowing window, a variety suited to the field, certified seed and a balanced nutrient and irrigation plan.

Punjab wheat sowing dates for 2026

For rain-fed (barani) areas, Punjab Agriculture Extension advised farmers to begin sowing from 15 October and complete it by 15 November. Irrigated-area farmers should follow the latest district-specific advisory and the recommended window for their selected variety. Do not apply one date to every district or variety: temperature, soil moisture, irrigation access and variety characteristics all matter.

Approved wheat varieties for rain-fed areas

The Punjab Agriculture Department has highlighted these approved varieties for barani wheat: Shiraz-23, Urooj-22, Nishan-21, MA-21, Markaz-19, Barani-17, Fateh Jang-16 and Pakistan-13. Confirm the variety’s suitability for your tehsil and buy certified seed with intact certification details. A variety recommended for rain-fed conditions may not be the best choice for every irrigated field.

Newly approved wheat variety for 2026: Rizq-26

Rizq-26, a biofortified wheat variety developed by the Wheat Research Institute (WRI), Faisalabad, was approved by the Punjab Seed Council in its 61st meeting, according to the institute’s announcement. It is described as zinc-biofortified, high-yielding, rust-resistant, drought-tolerant and suitable for good chapati quality. Biofortification means the grain is bred to contain more of a target nutrient—in this case zinc.

Important for growers: the publicly available Punjab Agriculture Department wheat-variety table has not yet provided a verified sowing window, recommended districts or numerical yield-potential figure for Rizq-26. Do not assume it is suitable for every area or rely on unverified yield claims. Before purchasing seed, confirm availability, certification and the latest district-specific instructions with WRI Faisalabad or your local Agriculture Extension office.

Seed rate: a practical field target

For rain-fed Punjab, the department’s advisory recommends approximately 40–50 kg of seed per acre. The correct rate depends on sowing date, seed germination, seed size, planting method and soil moisture. Use the current local recommendation rather than increasing the rate blindly. Calibrate the seed drill and check seed placement before covering the whole field.

Yield potential is not a yield guarantee

Punjab’s official wheat-variety information lists potential yields around 62–76 maunds per acre for several established varieties, including Barani-70 (62), Arooj (76), Subhani (70), MH-2021 (70) and Dilkash (71). One maund equals 40 kg, so 70 maunds per acre equals 2,800 kg per acre. These are variety-level yield potentials under suitable conditions, not predictions for every farm. Actual yield can be lower due to weather, water, soil fertility, weeds, disease, seed quality and crop management.

Build a good seedbed and sow evenly

Prepare a level seedbed with suitable moisture and avoid unnecessary tillage. Uniform placement helps the crop emerge more evenly. Use a calibrated drill where appropriate, keep seed at the locally recommended depth and avoid leaving large gaps or placing seed too deeply. Manage crop residues without burning them, which damages air quality and wastes organic matter.

Fertilizer and irrigation: plan before sowing

Base fertilizer use on soil-test results where available, the previous crop and local extension guidance. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium perform different roles; extra application of one nutrient does not compensate for a shortage of another. For rain-fed fields, conserve soil moisture and consider the seasonal rainfall outlook. For irrigated fields, plan water availability and drainage so the crop is not exposed to either prolonged waterlogging or avoidable moisture stress.

Seed quality checklist

  • Choose a variety recommended for your area and cropping conditions.
  • Buy certified seed from an authorized seller and inspect the label and seal.
  • Check germination and seed health; do not use grain of unknown origin as seed.
  • Use the recommended seed rate and calibrate the drill.
  • Confirm sowing dates and fertilizer rates with local extension staff.
  • Keep records of variety, sowing date, seed rate, fertilizer and irrigation.

Key takeaway for farmers

Timely sowing, suitable certified seed and uniform crop establishment are practical steps farmers can control. Select varieties and input rates for the local environment, and treat published yield potential as a benchmark rather than a promise.
